Holohan wins Government contract to design national sports campus

National stadium in Abbotsown, Co Dublin, to produce ‘new generation of winning Irish athletes’ - Gar Holohan

Gar Holohan, who’s the chairman of specialist architects firm the Holohan Group, this week won a prestigious Government contract to design the new sports campus in Abbotstown in North Dublin in partnership with FaulknerBrowns.

The Holohan Group won the contract after a competitive international tendering process. Mr Holohan said he was honoured to have been appointed to design one of the most important facilities for Irish sport since the foundation of the State.

‘The Abbotstown Sports Campus is a watershed project for Irish sport.
‘It will change the way future generations of Irish athletes prepare and train for international competition.
‘It will produce a new generation of winning Irish athletes training and competing at the top of their game,’ said Mr Holohan.

Mr Holohan pointed out that, in 2004, the Holohan Group carried out a feasibility study on the sports campus project and produced a detailed masterplan which is now being adopted as the blueprint for the development of a national sports campus.

‘We consulted with more than 16 key project stakeholders including the Irish Sports Council, GAA, IRFU, Olympic Council of Ireland, Fingal County Council and the Government in the development of the plan.
‘Our primary objective was to design a national sports campus that provided the best holistic environment for Irish athletes to prepare to win at international level.
‘The Abbotstown facilities will be universally accessible so that athletes with physical disabilities who are preparing for events such as the Paralympics will be able to reach peak performance in a specially adapted training environment.

‘Our vast experience with designing and managing high-quality sports and leisure centres afforded us the expertise to create the kind of modern facilities that athletes expect and that support the implementation of the Irish Sports Council’s High-Performance Strategy,’ said Mr Holohan.

The Sports Campus is divided into four zones: to the north is the training zone for professional field sports; to the west are the training zones for indoor hall sports, amateur field sports and public recreation; to the south a public park will be developed for passive recreation; and the eastern zone is designated for future development

Mr Holohan said: ‘The Central Core Building is located at the heart of the Sports Campus.
‘It is designed to provide the holistic environment needed for training at world-class level.
‘The main building will house living accommodation, restaurant, fitness gymnasium, sports medical and recovery areas which can be shared by all sports teams.
‘This in turn links to the changing nodes for rugby, soccer and GAA - each of which have dedicated briefing rooms with video analysis capability.

‘The field sports training facilities comprise indoor and outdoor, natural and artificial, floodlit pitches which will allow squads to prepare for international competition, irrespective of weather conditions.
‘The National Indoor Centre will provide world-class training facilities for over 20 National Governing Bodies.

‘This is a very exciting project for the Holohan Group and for Ireland.
‘I believe the Abbotstown Sports Campus will lead to a paradigm shift in Ireland’s participation in international competitive sports.
‘It is designed to help Ireland to fully exploit the sporting potential of its athletes and to produce a new generation of winners into the future.

‘The involvement of the Holohan Group, with our vast expertise and experience in specialist leisure architecture, will help to ensure that Abbotstown becomes the sporting home for a new generation of top Irish athletes and the winners of the future.’
